Ali Ahmed, The Winger Who Needed Ten Minutes

Born in Toronto to Ethiopian parents, he trialled across Europe before Vancouver Whitecaps gave him his chance to shine.

Ahmed spent his teenage years chasing trials across Europe before Vancouver Whitecaps finally gave him an academy pathway, and he made the most of it. He became the first academy player there to earn a permanent professional contract. He went on to win the Canadian Championship and its award for the country's best young player, building a reputation as a direct, creative wide player.

That instinct to affect a match immediately rather than easing into it was obvious from his Norwich debut, where he set up a goal inside the opening ten minutes. He has already represented Canada at a World Cup, which suggests his temperament matches his talent when the stakes are highest. The tension for a winger who makes such an instant impact is consistency, because defenders quickly adjust once they have seen him once.

Ali Ahmed: The Wide-Lane Disruptor

He makes defences uncomfortable because he keeps asking the same hard question, can you stop me in space.

That directness creates room inside for midfielders to arrive and combine. Even when the ball is on the other side, his positioning stretches the line and opens lanes for a switch. Vancouver look more dangerous when he’s driving at people with intent. If you love wingers who bring urgency, he’s your pick.
