MLS doesn't crown its champion based on the regular season table. The team that finishes top earns the Supporters' Shield, which is its own trophy and carries genuine prestige. The league title is decided through a separate knockout tournament at the end of the season that’s called the MLS Cup Playoffs. Here’s how it works.

How many teams make the MLS playoffs?

Eighteen teams qualify in total. MLS is divided into the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, and the top nine clubs from each conference make the postseason. With 30 clubs in the league, just over half of them get in, which means every team has to put in a reasonable regular season to have any chance.

Seeding is determined by points accumulated across the 34-game season. The higher a team finishes in their conference, the better their seed. And seeding matters a great deal because it determines home advantage throughout the tournament.

Teams finishing first through seventh in each conference qualify directly for Round One. Teams finishing eighth and ninth go into the Wild Card round first.

The playoff format round by round

The playoffs run through four rounds before the MLS Cup final. The Wild Card round is a single-match elimination between the eighth and ninth seeds in each conference. The higher seed hosts. If the game is tied after 90 minutes there is no extra time and it goes straight to penalties. The winner advances to Round One to face the top seed in their conference.

Round One is the only round that uses a best-of-three format. The higher seed hosts the first game and, if necessary, the third game. The lower seed hosts the second. There is no aggregate score involved. Each game must produce a winner and if a game is tied it goes straight to penalties, with no extra time. The first team to win two games advances to the conference semifinals.

The conference semifinals, conference finals and MLS Cup are all single-match eliminations. From this stage onwards, ties after 90 minutes go to two 15-minute periods of extra time. If it's still level after extra time, penalties decide it.

The MLS Cup itself is hosted by the team that had the better regular record across the whole season. That means a club can earn home advantage in the final by topping the overall league standings, regardless of which conference they came from.

How home advantage works in the MLS playoffs

Home advantage in the MLS playoffs is significant and the data backs it up. Finishing in the top four of each conference, which guarantees home games in the first round, is one of the most important targets of the regular season for any playoff-bound club.

The higher seed hosts in every round except for the guaranteed away game in the Round One series. That means a team that wins their conference and stays top-seeded throughout could play every playoff game at home until the final, where hosting rights go to the club with the superior regular season record. This creates a structure where the regular season matters beyond just qualifying. Finishing first in your conference rather than fourth is the difference between home comforts throughout the knockout rounds and having to win on the road to stay in the tournament.

For the Wild Card teams, the odds are steep. Winning a single elimination game on the road, going straight to penalties if it's tied, then facing the top seed in a three-game series is a difficult path. But Wild Card sides have pulled off upsets before, which is what makes the format so compelling to watch year after year.
